Magnolia friends Jim and Janet Rader are parked in our spare spot. They were on a trip to Omaha for the Antique Road Show then making a swing toward home by way of highway 30. They at first planned to stay at Spring Lake. We drove out to Spring Lake and with the 4th next weekend it was very full. We put in our spare RV site for exactly this reason. So glad to share our special spot in our special town with our special friends.
Jim, Janet and Butch are playing golf as I write. I do hope to get a picture of them soon. In the meantime here are pictures that Janet took yesterday shortly after they settled in. Maybe we can go up in the Belltower this afternoon. Or go for a ride on the bike trail....or both!

Ride to Bridge -day2
Butch and I rode to the bridge again today. Colleen and I have not been able to walk because it has been raining early morning so Butch and I have waited till late morning and then biked out to the bridge-5 miles round trip. Today the water level was much higher. We had believed it would be lower so it was a surprise.
This first picture was taken on the 13th when Butch and I made a bridge run. I didn't have my phone or camera with me that day so borrowed Butch's phone to take this picture. Flowers will bloom in the strangest places.
These two were taken today from some of the same places as yesterday.

Stuck in the middle
We are stuck in the middle of the country with a continuous cloud over us. I am so tired of rain! Day before yesterday we had 5 inches in a 24 hour period. Some of us in Iowa had as much as 9 inches. Our backyard was flooded. By the end of the day, most of it had soaked away, but, of course the mud remains. Yesterday was relatively rain free-once it quit in the morning. Butch and I rode to the river for a look. Later in the day we cruised the area to look at water. There was not a shortage of it. I have many pictures to post. Unfortunately if you do not know what it looks like without water the photos will be lost on you.
On the bike trail at the Raccoon River Valley Bridge
Butch and Bob Anderson looking upriver...
Here comes a tree, roots and all.
And here is a tree and a tire, complete with wheel.
Tree down on the trail just south of the bridge.
Spring Lake Park
Trust me to say this is new water.
Completely flooded on right side of road. In fact, water was running across the road in places. There was one camper to the right of the water that was blocked in till the water goes down. In talking to campers, it was not scary for them. The wind was not severe. I still think I would have been up and watching the water rise if not packing up and moving out. The problem with moving would have been that it was dark and you might have been moving into worse danger.
Trees getting their feet wet.
Leo and Keri's waterfront property
This flooding happens periodically for them. They are less than a quarter mile from Hardin Creek. They have taken extreme sump pump moves and installation to keep an invasion at bay.

Friends Donn and Peggy
This is a great photo of our friends Donn and Peggy Gordon. On the pier in San Diego, I assume? This is one of Peggy's favorite places in the world. And it appears the sun is shining on a warm and sunny summer day. I am envious!

Little Leo Story
Little Leo is two. Papa Gary and Nana Susan were with daughter Amanda and the grandkids Elise and Leo. They were at a restaurant and Amanda asked Leo if he wanted chicken or hamburger? He said, "pizza!" She said,This restaurant does not have pizza, do you want hamburger or chicken? He said, "pizza!" Nana and Papa are amused at this point. Amanda reminded her parents they were not helping. Amanda says to Leo, "This is not funny! Leo says, "Yes, It is funny!"
Gotta admit the kid knows funny when he hears it. He is a hoot and very funny and very two.

'Company' at the History Boy Theatre
We attended a performance last night of the musical Company at the History Boy Theatre here in Jefferson. It was the first time we had attended one of their productions and we were not disappointed. Below is a couple of links about the play.

Light at the end of the tunnel?
I see that light a coming...maybe. I am getting closer to having all my chores done around here. I am working on a second flower/rock bed behind the garage. It will be one we see from the 3 season room. If I had the energy to put in two full days I would be finished, I say optimistically. At any rate, I feel better about things and may concede and leave something for next spring or summer.
Have you ever had a wren growl at you? We have a house wren in a birdhouse outside our back door. I can see it quite well and when I looked the other day Mr/Mrs Wren looked at me with one eye and the feathers under the chin puffed all up and there was a growling sound! No doubt about the message. It was not a welcoming one.
Our rain forest summer has blessed us with a gazillion or more mosquitos. I apply bug repellant but still come inside and a few hours later notice more new bites. Then I want to growl like the wrens do.
Butch has been helping me with some of my projects as well as his own. (the antique mower) His project isn't going so well right now, but he is not ready to give up.
Yesterday Butch and I did a short tour. We went out to Spring Lake to see how many campers there were and the place was nearly full. It is a county park between Jefferson and Grand Junction Iowa. http://www.mycountyparks.com/county/Greene/Park/Spring-Lake-Park.aspx
Spring Lake holds many childhood memories for me because my family went for a dip in the lake almost every hot summer night. We would wait anxiously for Dad to get off work and then pile in the car to go to the lake. This was in the days of no air conditioning so it was a blessed relief to be in the water. After we had all cooled off we would get into our clothes and on the way back to town hold our swimsuits out the window to dry. It is a wonder we didn't lose them, but as I remember it we never did.
The lake and park are much more sophisticated than when I was a child. Some things are the same, like the skating rink and shelter houses but now they have camping and the grounds are maintained. It was more primitive in the 50's.
Yesterday on our tour, Butch and I came home the back way and stopped at a rock pile I had spotted at the edge of a farm field. We loaded up a few rocks and I have my eye on more. If we take it a bit at a time, it might not be so daunting.
So as you can tell not much of note going on here but we are having the best time ever not doing much.

10 uses for beer...besides the usual ones!
I doubt that Butch would give a stamp of approval to any of them! Colleen was telling me this morning, beer placed in a shallow dish will rid your garden of slugs. I think I will sneak some away from him and give it to the slug family.

Data Breaches and Spam
Data breaches are rampant these days. A couple of days ago my LastPass password protector program had a data breach! So I changed my Google account password and my LastPass master password. Not all of my passwords were affected and by changing the two basic ones it should take care of it. I change the Google one every few months and I do have to write it down or I would never remember it. I feel the notebook I write it in is probably safer than having an easy password every hacker could figure out. So my new passwords are 11 digits long, upper and lower case and as random as possible.Geez!
And then there is spam...Since I am all about Google I do not have much of a concern for spam but thought some might, so am posting this article I recently ran across.
And then there is spam...Since I am all about Google I do not have much of a concern for spam but thought some might, so am posting this article I recently ran across.
7 tips to Help You Can the Spam
1. Never respond to unsolicited email. One response or “hit” from thousands of emails is enough for spammers to justify the practice. In addition, a response lets the spammer know that your email address is active, which makes it more valuable and opens the door to more spam.
2. Never send your personal information (credit card numbers, passwords, etc.) in an email. Spammers can fake the format of ANY trusted sites. Banks and other trusted sites will never ask you to send your password or credit card information by email. Not really an anti-spam tip, but a reminder… OK?
3. Never follow a spam email’s instructions to reply with the word “remove” or “unsubscribe” in the subject line or body of the message unless you are sure of and trust the source of the email. Normally, this is a ploy to get you to react to the email, which tells the spammer that your email address is valid.
4. Never click on a URL or web address listed within a spam email, even if the message tells you that’s how you unsubscribe. This is another trick to that tells the spammer your email address is valid. Once they know your address is valid it can be added to databases which are sold to professional spammers on DVD or CD for a few hundred dollars. And this will result in you getting more spam for sure!
5. Don’t fall for sites set up to help you remove your name from spam lists. Although some of these sites MIGHT be legitimate, most are really collecting valid email addresses to sell to spammers. If a collector gets your address and they know it’s a valid, working email address, it is worth a lot of money to them. They’ll put your email address in one of their databases and sell these databases to professional spammers. Not only won’t your email address be removed from spam lists, it will added to many spam lists. And you’ll get more spam.
6. Never allow your ISP to convince you that spam filtering is a service. If you have a choice, choose an ISP who does not use spam filtering. While spam filtering might seem to be a service and a good thing, remember that any time you allow another person to make choices for you, you’re going to end up with something you don’t like. What you won’t like about ISPs who filter your mail is that you’re not going to get all of your good email either – and you might not even be aware it existed. Do not use ISPs who tout spam-filtering or anti-spam features as a plus. If you don’t have a choice of ISPs in your area and your only choice is an ISP who insists censorship is good for you, get a Gmail account and set it up in your favorite email program. Gmail provides instructions on how to do this. And, remember, my fine friends, that Gmail also has spam-filtering too, but luckily for you, you have the final say. If something, like this newsletter, ends up in your spam folder, all you gotta do is mark it “This is not spam” and it will never be dumped in your spam folder again – it will always appear in your inbox where you want it (we hope!).
7. Consider allowing Gmail to get mail from your other accounts. While Gmail’s filters are not perfect, they’re the best we’ve seen. It’s easy to set Gmail to retrieve your mail from your other email accounts. When you do this, then Gmail is filtering all email before you retrieve it. And as we’ve said before, you have the final say whether something is spam or not — once you tell Gmail that something placed in the spam folder is not spam, it won’t be placed in the spam folder again.

Bell Tower Parade 2015
In Iowa Parades and tractors go together like ham and eggs. This is a collection of toy tractors, always a hit with young Iowa farmers.
Keith Conroy, a classmate of mine from the class of '61 restores tractors and this is his latest effort.
Jefferson has an honest-to-god A&W drive-in. Want a root beer float?
Just thought she was cute...
This was a float for a Day Care facility. That is one BIG baby!
Will farm equipment get any bigger?
Many sitting in my area thought this to be the most unique entry in the parade. A working Ferris wheel
More big ol' farm equipment.
Horses!!!
Lovely tree on the courthouse square.
Gary and Susan came up from Missouri for the weekend and we have been busy with Belltower festivities and other fun like golf, walking and biking. Never enough time to see and do everything. It has been fun and it was some kind of miracle- it hasn't rained since Friday morning.

This Town is Changing
about
Please excuse the old cliche.
Every time I come back home
I see that things are changing
from my family to old school friends
I haven't seen since graduation
Please excuse the old cliche
seems like only yesterday I was there
riding my bike around the square
I may come back only once a year
but I feel I never left
it's where my childhood is kept
I've got some things in a box upstairs
but it's all over town
all I've got to do is look around
But Lincolnway feels a mile too short
where the school was stands a food court
and all my old friends have long since moved away
This town is changing but let my memories stay
Graffiti bridge has got a new coat of names
kids I never knew
but scratch away ten years or more
and you might find my name, too
Oh, how years accumulate
just like coats of old spray paint they're still there
memories layer after layer
I may not feel that sticky sweat from the old summer sun
but I remember we had fun
I may not drive just for something to do
on a Sunday afternoon
just going to Ames or to Boone
But Lincolnway feels a mile too short
where the school was stands a food court
and all my old friends have long since moved away
This town is changing but let my memories stay
There will come a day when my childhood home
is someone elses
will I stop or drive on by
I can almost hear their voices
and oh is that what I will say?
or maybe seems like yesterday I was there
dad was joking bout his lack of hair
I can't see the stars at night as clearly as I did
when I was just a kid
I may never hear silences any sweeter than those
and deeper than I'll ever know

Leo calls Susan 'Nanny' on the left and his mom Amanda is on the right and he sure enjoys it when they make a Leo sandwich.
tropical rain forest?
We seem to be living in a tropical rain forest where vegetation and mosquitos thrive. They informed us on the news that the conditions have been ideal for poison ivy and it has morphed into a super-toxic strain. Leaves of three- let it be.
The outside work is making progress but is the primary reason for a lack of posts. I still have more to do out there but the rain mentioned above sure puts a Damp-er on things. Ha! My friend Mickey gifted me with some lilies I need to get planted and yesterday I purchased a clematis for a special spot. Years ago a friend who knows about these things told me it was wrong to mud plants in when planting and I have remembered it ever since. So they will have to remain potted until the time and conditions are right...and before they become pot bound. Life is such a delicate balance!
The "pot" these flowers are resting in is actually a piece of water piping we purchased at an auction for a dollar. I wanted it to cover the sewer clean-out pipe that is a smart idea to have above ground, but not particularly pretty. It works well. I like the color.

We went to Missouri for a fast trip. My cousin Donnie Zimmerle passed away suddenly. Two weeks ago he was diagnosed with cancer and opted out of treatment. His passing was a big surprise. Donnie's Dad, Jack, and my Mom, Fern were brother and sister and the two youngest of the original 7 Zimmerle siblings. Donnie and I were born in the same year. I suppose others called him Don but he will always be Donnie to me. Donnie was a great guy, always a smile on his face. We were born in the era when Sundays meant being at Grandma Zimmerle's for dinner. The cousin's were always there too. Let's see there were 5 in Jack's branch, 4 in Harold's, 5 in Phil's, 2 in Vivian's and 4 in Fern's at the time so that is a bunch (20) of cousin's. Two of the original 7, Ray and Mae, did not have children. We played a variety of games while the adults sat around the kitchen table talking. We have been out of touch, other than Facebook, for many years so I did not know many people in attendance. There was one little girl I would guess her to be 8 or 9 and she cried nearly the whole time we were there. She was inconsolable although many were trying. She seemed sincerely grief-stricken. I am guessing she might have been a granddaughter or great-granddaughter. She left an impression on me.

Progress
Spent most of yesterday on yard work. Finally getting a break in the persistent rain. We have been putting the finishing touches on things. We are closer to being picture ready.
Here are some teasers. Butch has been feeding the squirrels. Not at all sure this is a good idea and even more so when I saw 5 of them playing race and chase in the yard. In case you are curious yes, that is a satellite dish now used as a bird feeder/waterer. Cannot think of a better use for one

Beautiful sunset last night but there is a price to pay for living in town.
Yesterday Butch and I went to the A & W for a root beer and we were grubby so we used the drive in service. Butch turned on the radio and the BeeGees were singing. I said, "They are singing something woman but I cannot make it out. Do you know what it is?" Butch said, "Four legged woman." I laughed so hard the tears ran down my face! I know- it was just one of those moments. Butch said, "Gotta picture, huh?" I said, "uh, huh". And started all over again! The actual song is "More than a Woman" and I looked it up to be sure.

I cannot even believe it!
Yesterday Mickey and I lined up a Costco day. While in DesMoines my phone rang and I had missed my hair appointment. Just plain forgot it! Marcia my hairdresser is heavily booked and missing this appointment distressed me.
Mickey had a "moment" too when she thought she lost her purse and had left it in the cart at Walmart. That is another one that will make your heart twitter when it happens to you.
Son Gary and Susan were in Iowa yesterday checking out a truck and selling a car and so it was considered getting together with them. And my friend Sherri from Atlantic called and said she would be in town and would it be okay to stop by and, of course, that answer was yes. At one point, Butch's phone rang at the same time mine did so I was holding phones in each hand when I looked in the driveway and my friend Colleen was here! If I remember right it was son Jason on one phone and son Gary on the other. Oh yes, I was also in contact with my niece Karla off and on throughout the day.
What a day it has been!
Great practice for living in the moment!

Auction fun!
A while back son Jason asked me to find tractor seats because he had a craft project that he needed two tractor seats to complete. So yesterday we went to an auction in Jefferson and there were two tractor seats! So I called Jason and he switched gears for the day and came to Jefferson. Laura and Ethan came with him and we had a fun impromptu day!
And by the way, Jason bought his two tractor seats. Ethan spotted this car, took temporary ownership and entertained himself for most of the auction. Jason tried to get it for him, but it went for more than Jason planned to spend.
Jason also bought something that this cane came with so Ethan took a break from the car long enough to pretend he was an old man. That was pretty funny too because he was good at it.
After we came back to Jason's after the auction Ethan set up his microphone and played auction for a bit and then decided to put on a show, lining up chairs in his pretend theater for us to sit on. We adults were a little bit cooperative, but it became clear that there really wasn't going to be a show. As it ended he said everyone attending would get a free toy and handed them out. He then said, "You get what you get and be thankful for it." That cracked us up!
Jason wanted me to get a photo of this ivy covered building not too far from his place because he does not think it will be standing too much longer.

Iowa Child
Iowa Child
by Sarah Hall Maney
I am an Iowa child
Part and product of the land on which I grew
Flat and open and straight, like
the farm roads that bordered the corn
Friendly and receptive, like the rich,
black soil that grows the corn
Simple, and plain, but productive,
Like the fields of soy beans and hay
Yes, I am an Iowa child
There have been times when
I have kept it hidden
Pretending somewhere, something, someone else
But today I stand with it
Drawing upon the strength of it -
Acknowledging the unique gifts
I share with it
Of course, an Iowa child has not many
deep, intriguing forests within -
Not many clear, refreshing lakes to draw upon
No lofty, grand mountain peaks to soar from
No yawning canyons to descend -
And I know my Iowa child must live
And come to terms with the part of me
That is controlled, precise, yearning
to be perfect -
Like the squared-off, ruler-straight rows
of hybrid seed corn
Perhaps I will never be
as exciting, as spontaneous,
as a tumbling Colorado mountain stream
As magnificent as a
crashing California ocean wave
As serene and stately as a Minnesota pine tree
But no matter
I am who I am
An Iowa child
And that is enough
Dance Recital -Elise
Elise's adoring grandpa Gary does not do Facebook and he tells me he doesn't see pics of the grands unless I put them on the blog. Sometimes I am good about it and sometimes not. I am a hard person to take on guilt...I just say "No" to guilt but in this case it works...at least this time!
She is so stinking cute. She gives off vibes of capability. I can see her running a business, a state or a country some day and doing an excellent job of it.
