Weather and other stuff

We too are looking at a streak of less than ideal weather. One of the advantages to being this far south is that we can see it coming from a long way off. We are all getting prepared to hunker down and enjoy a few days of deep south Texas winter. It will be fun, I say! The pool hall will be open, we have lots of food on hand, and our propane tank is full. There are many other good things too but too many to mention off the top of my head. Monday is the day we are all most focused on.

Getting the first Covid vaccine has had unexpected thoughts for me. It is a bit like Christmas as a child. It was always a long way off and a bit out of reach and then it happened! My main feeling is one of relief, surprisingly. At last, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Another surprise is the number of people who say they are not getting it. Some are understandable, health reasons, a waiting game to see that we who do, don't drop over dead like a bunch of flies and those with a bit of simple apprehension. The ones who aren't getting it for political reasons or just plain stubbornness are the most troublesome as they continue to put the people around them at risk. We will still wear our masks, socially distance, and wash our hands to guard against the naysayers and do our part to aid our fellow humans. To me wearing a mask is a bit like a visual handshake. It says I care about your wellbeing as well as my own.

The trees in south Texas are budding! In a short time, we will be having full-blown leaves on the trees. It happens so quickly. The birds are happily singing away looking for a hook-up so they can settle down, build a nest, and carry on with the next phases of their chirpy lives.

Love ya' all!!

Covid-19 Vaccine Experience

We previously registered online at UT Health RGV. It is the Medical College in Edinburg TX. I think it was early January when we registered and Monday we received notice that we could get the vaccine. So I went online and followed the directions for both of us and made appointments for today 2/9/21. A contact called us last night and helped me finish up the details of it all including online check-in. So this morning we headed to the college in Edinburg, an 11-mile trip, and foggy conditions but it all went smoothly. While on the phone with them last night we also made an appointment for the second dose on March 2nd in the same place. I never dreamed the process would go that smoothly. Our appointment was for 8:30 but if you are there and ready, in you go! We did not wait for even a minute and we were back home a little after 9. We did have to wait for 15 minutes to rule out a reaction. We were each given a folder with our beginning time on it and shown to a waiting area with chairs 6 feet apart and a big clock on the wall. When the time was up we checked with the woman at the door and she gave us a card saying we had the first dose and the appointment time for our second dose. I was greatly impressed with their efficiency.

So we are on our way to being fully vaccinated. I feel it is the first step to getting back to some degree of normalcy. We will continue masks, distance, and handwashing until we feel it is safe to relax a bit. In case you wonder it is the Pfizer vaccine we were given.

Column by Colleen O’Brien

 Nostalgia, redux

February 3, 2021

~a column by Colleen O’Brien

Looking into old boxes as I putter around my house in reclusive pandemic mode, I find two years’ worth of columns dated 1984 and ’85.

“That’s 37 years ago!” I exclaim aloud, unbelieving that that much time has elapsed. I do not feel nearly 40 years older, I think, not looking in a mirror.

The columns were timely to the time or just nostalgia. If it was nostalgia then, it’s ancient history now….

“Sounds’ silent memories,” A Moment with O’Brien,

North Lake Tahoe Bonanza newspaper | February 1, 1984

“A sound can trigger a memory that takes us to a time and place far away and long ago. Music will do this easily – ‘How much is that Doggy in the Window?’ takes me directly to my grandparents’ living room circa 1952. My sisters and I are singing our hearts out for the adoring relatives.

“The drone of a propeller plane is just as effective at removing me from today and plopping me into my childhood. I am lazing in the grass of my backyard identifying shapes of cumulus clouds and feeling an unfamiliar yearning as I track the occasional airplane passing over my town.

“Today when I hear a prop plane I return immediately to that scene from my childhood, and I can feel the tickle of warm grass on my neck, I can see my white house with the green shutters out of the corner of my eye, and I’m that little girl again imagining tiny people in the tiny plane overhead.

“Memory is not the most accurate recording device. It’s possible that scene I see so clearly when I hear the prop planes is an accumulation of many different days spent dreaming in the sun. Maybe it was my sister, or Mikey Steve, the neighbor kid, who said, ‘Think of those tiny little people in that tiny little plane.’

“The sound of sawing and hammering fills me with a sense of well-being and prosperity. I’m the Kool-Aid entrepreneur of the south end of town, where major house-building is taking place. I’m racking in the coins as the carpenters file past for a tall cold one. They flip nickels into my dish, and my Kool-Aid costs only two cents a glass. They don’t want change. Rich, I’m rolling in the dough, jingling the coins in my pocket. I really love the tune of a hammer and saw.

“Not all sounds conjure up pleasant scenes of bucolic days or memories of childhood affluence. One pitch employed by crying babies transports me to that bewildering, exhausting first week of the new mother with her first baby, living again with her parents, her husband in Vietnam. The sound gives me the shivers and makes me feel so sorry for the mom who doesn’t know what she’s doing and for the kid who’s getting madder by the minute because his mother (supposedly his mother, maybe he got the dumb one because of a mix-up in the nursery) is so dense.

“I could go forever and be happy never hearing that breathless, choking ‘lah, lah, lah’ of the newborn. I get suddenly tired and feel ridiculously young and stupid and trapped.

“The rhythmic clank of chains on crunchy snow, a sound common to this area, is a sound I hadn’t heard for 15 years. I didn’t know till I moved to the mountains that the sound of tire chains would jog a scene out of the back of my mind that I’d not considered for nearly two decades. It’s a day in the life of a teenager, where we clung to car fenders on the slick winter streets and got a thrill of a ride – until one of the kids hit a patch of pavement that sent him sprawling all over the street, blood gushing from his head.

“The car he’d been hanging onto drove clinkety clankety down the street, unaware of the foolish kid left bleeding in its wake. The sound of snow chains does it to me now – triggers that memory of blood on the snow and my friend lying there looking dead.

“He wasn’t. He was barely hurt. But for a few seconds it was horror and shock, and for that incident to return in full Technicolor simply because I hear a sound of chains on snow is still frightening.

“Not every sound triggers a scene from the first time we heard it or because of some significant even that occurred when the sound was going on. If that were so, we’d be deluged with memory scenes at every sound, on overload in no time. The brain is, if not discriminating, at least selective, in its cause-and-effect memories.

“The certain sounds we hear that put immediate fear in our hearts are often connected with scenes we don’t remember. There is no time and place that we can figure out, simply a fear that seems to have no basis: a door slammed loudly makes me unwarrantedly apprehensive. I don’t know what occurred in my past to instigate this anxiety, for there is no accompanying scene. It’s probably just the reaction to a loud noise, but the fast-beating heart continues for some time.

“The idea of sounds triggering memories might be put to good use. And it could be tested: Teaching algebraic equations and chemistry’s periodic table of elements accompanied by a loud bong on a bell or a growl or a squealing tire? Like Pavlov’s method, it might prove to be a more effective way of utilizing that great storage area in the head. Waiting for random sounds to reveal memory is such a haphazard way to live and learn.

Vaccine News

Butch and I have an appointment to get our first vaccine injection tomorrow morning at 8:30 AM in Edinburg TX at the Medical College. We are pleasantly surprised!

In Case You wonder...

As you know I am a fan of  RV Newsletter and saw this today and thought you might be curious too. Butch and I usually take their polls and when I went to answer I was surprised by the results.

Have you lost a friend or family member to Covid-19?

Last Day of Lockdown.

Ten days can seem like a long time when things are in lockdown mode. Butch and I have been fortunate in not having Covid so far and it is no time now to skid off the rails so we have abided by the rules. So today is the last day and we have no new covid cases in the park. We will remain cautious while enjoying the activities we can enjoy. Back to the pool hall! We both have missed it.

The redwing blackbirds have a heavy presence here and Butch wishes they would move on! He likes to feed the birds but wishes he could control which birds he feeds. It irks him that it does not work that way. It will be better for them when he can get back to the pool hall. Getting yelled at doesn't seem to affect them too much though.

Our Super Bowl plans are to spend part of the day playing Pool and part of it with our 8 0r 9 "Bubble People" and the rest of it at home.

Despite all the restrictions the year has presented it is still going fast. For all you younguns the older you get the faster it goes! You too will someday have a full understanding of that fact.

On a Brighter note

New visitors to the bird ball! I forgot that goldfinches have much more subdued plumage in the winter so I asked for ID from Deon and she reminded me. They flit about quite a bit but I did manage to get a pretty good shot.

Update on Covid info

Son Gary and Susan did recover from Covid. Gary had it worse than Susan and it was a full 14 or more days before recovery. I haven't asked if they have any lingering after-effects and perhaps I should.

The Covid couple never did have any symptoms, apparently or if they did it wasn't much. It is far enough out from the test date (January 21st) that they are probably okay now and have been for a while but park management has a strict policy of any infractions of the rules and it is a 10-day automatic lockdown so nothing will be open till at least Feb 6th. I do believe their behavior was more from stupidity rather than belligerence and if it had been the latter they would be in much more trouble.

Ostrasized

Sad but true story. Mr. and Mrs. John Doe for some unknown reason decided to get a covid test on Thursday, January 21st. They then went about their business doing all the activities available to them within the RV park, specifically the sewing room and the main hall, perhaps the swimming pool, and who knows what else. On Monday they received word that they were positive for Covid. They did not change their routine much although they did tell some people they came in contact with and said, "Keep your distance. I have Covid." They told one of their neighbors after a few days and she was the whistleblower. The rumor mill was busy and by Thursday the 29th a full week after getting tested, word got up to management. Management called the Does and asked if it were true and they verified that it was. Heads started to roll. We are on lockdown. All activities are suspended including the pool hall and the golf course. This will be the way it is for 10 days unless we are unlucky enough to have another positive case within the park come to light. The irresponsibility and/or stupidity is unbelievable. This IOWA couple now has 398 people angry with them. More than that really because this also affects our sister park next door.

We personally do not know these people and as far as we know have not had direct contact. The indirect contact is the worrisome part as those of us with functioning brain cells are well aware. Time will tell. We feel like we are back at the beginning.

So we are settling in for a long winter's nap, knuckling down and being ever more diligent. Our bubble of safety became even smaller.

Continued: I didn't post this right away not knowing if management would see it and be upset by it, however, these two are being seen all over the park in their golf cart and their car is frequently missing from their parking spot. So quarantine and isolation are also beyond their understanding. If I can educate even one person about what is expected of them if they have a positive test I am happy to do so.

They were asked, not the right word, TOLD to stay isolated for 10 days. Many people offered to get them anything they needed thinking they were sick. The problem was they were asymptomatic, another very big word they do not take seriously. Unfortunately they have labeled themselves and forevermore will be remembered for this one stupid action. At least in this part of Texas.

Walk with pics

Butch is playing golf this morning with 4 of his friends so I took my camera on a walk hoping for some opportunistic photos.

Here are my results...

The Dog Park

Candy and Thelma. Thelma was disappointed because I did not have Butch with me.

The vegetable wagon comes every Thursday morning. They had just arrived and were getting ready for the throng of buyers.

Horse Shoes!

A hint of green gives a promise of Spring...at the end of next month.

This is what Butch wants to do to the tree that gave part of itself to the roof of our MoHo. If it is a healthy tree and it is cut at the right height it will recover. Butch saw the results of this during his lineman years.

PJ (Paul), Dave, and most of Alex on the golf course.
Butch and Bob...

All five in this one..PJ, Butch, Alex (behind pole) Bob ,and Dave. Alex and Butch have much in common. They both talk incessantly and if in the same room they will most likely both be talking. They are both competitive and good at whatever endeavor they are involved with at the time. And since neither of them stands still it can be difficult to get a decent picture.

A Few Minutes...

I have a few minutes before I get my haircut. My friend Liz cuts it for me. It was her profession for many years and still is I might say. We played cribbage with Dave and Liz last night and she told us she had spent the past two days getting the first vaccine injection. Monday they waited in line six hours to get a ticket and then Tuesday they woke up at three to get there early and still waited an hour and a half. That was Liz and a couple of her friends as Dave got his from the VA a week or so ago. So both of our friends, Liz and Dave have been vaccinated. We are still waiting on CVS Pharmacy to notify us. Our phone will be where they tell us they have the vaccine and then we will make an appointment. Cross my fingers!

I played pool the past two days. Women's days are Monday and Tuesday afternoon. Monday I played well, but Tuesday not so much. It is the constant ebb and flow of life I say philosophically!

Pics fiddled with

Whoops!

I looked back to see if I posted the last pics of the pool hall and I couldn't see that I had. I am talking about Brooker's Pool Hall in Jefferson IA. So here they are! I was probably waiting for a good internet connection and then when I got it I forgot! It is fun to look at them again!

Looks like the pictures need to be lightened up a bit. Might do that and repost.

Parrots!

As some of you know our friends Jim and Deon Spangler are staying in a  different park this year to be near family and it also seems nearer the parrots! I am a bit envious as I always ran for my camera too when the parrots showed up in Magnolia.

Here is Deon's post telling us all about it:

"Remember the days when the parrots would land in Magnolia Park?? They did and it happened pretty often, early morning and then again late afternoon or early evening. They had some favorite trees down on Pecos where they found something to their liking. Well, this morning we were over at Chet & Irma's here in Trails End and the parrots finally landed. We were busy planting some plants but I ran (yes, ran) back to our RV and got the camera and managed to get some pictures. They aren't great but they are better than nothing. It did remind us of the good old days. They were as noisy as ever and you can hear them coming and going for quite some time. It was a huge flock, one of the biggest I have ever seen and it was fun!! It was a very cloudy, dark day for picture taking but it was better than nothing."

A Post from 2013

I went back through some posts of past years and ran across this one from 2013. I do hope to get to South Padre and a walk on the beach in this current year of 2021 but for now, it was a pleasant walk in the past.

Gotta Nudge

I received a nudge from a reader that it has been a while since I posted. Believe it or not, I do appreciate a nudge now and then. Sometimes I get the feeling I am blogging to myself. Not that that is bad either. I do use this blog as a journal and I can go back over the past 20 years and get a memory jog or sometimes just a pleasant reminiscence.

The weather has been rainy, drizzly, cool, and very unlike "Sunny South Texas"  and much like Iowa in December. We, and sometimes just I, turn to Netflix at these stay at home times. I am watching, The Crown and both of us finished The Queens Gambit. Both of them very good. There is so much to choose from between NetFlix, Amazon Prime, and PBS Passport that it is like a smorgasbord.

My pool game is improving but I do need to get there and practice more...doesn't seem to happen.

Still have to cook at least one square meal a day. We are on our own for the other two. That one square can be my biggest challenge. Last night was ham, coleslaw, and a mixed salad. Butch added Potato salad. Tonight is, at this writing, still my biggest challenge, May send Butch to Church's for Chicken and do another salad.

I just remembered I have been making scrubby yarn dishcloths. A friend gave me one when we were still in Magnolia park and I am still using it. That has been 3 years now! I knew it wasn't going to last much longer so I purchased the yarn, (Red Heart Scrubby Yarn) and started making them. I like them because you can bleach them and they do not lose their color. The one I am still using gets bleached at least every two days. I have more than a dozen now so if you want one let me know. I like to keep my hands busy and out of the goodie jar.

It is nearing my breakfast time so till next time...So Long and it is good to know you!

Writers Block?

Sometimes I can be the wordiest person ever and other times not so much. I never know who is going to show up. I just have to start typing and find out.

It is 7:00AM on a Monday morning. A bit on the cool side at 56 degrees and there is a heavy fog warning. I hiked up the furnace a bit and looking at the forecast for the week I shouldn't have to do that again. Daytime temps near 80 and nighttime temps of 65. Ideal!

We haven't been doing much as we are still in Covid mode. We thought about going to the El Dorado for a breakfast taco yesterday but the parking lot was too full by our measure so we settled for McDonald's drive-through instead. After a quick trip to the grocery store, we were back in the park.

They quickly ran out of vaccines in the valley as in the rest of the nation. Sources say there should be more this coming week and the suggestion is to keep in touch with the places you would normally go for a vaccine and eventually you will get one. For us, that will be CVS Pharmacy and I am getting update notices from them in email. So I hope it is soon. There have been a few in the park who have received the first dose.

We played Mixed doubles pool yesterday afternoon and once again Butch and his partner won with 6 wins. My partner and I were on the completely opposite end of the spectrum with only one win. My game was completely off and my partner was new and a bit on the nervous side I am guessing because I could see that he had the skill to do well. Oh well...

Next time...
